This painting is a commission painting depicting the tracks left backside by one of the country rovers on the Martian landscape. It is one of 2 custom paintings commissioned by an art collector in Japan. The other painting is chosen "First Footprint on the Moon."
My customer did not want the actual land rover in his painting; he just wanted the tracks left backside on the "red planet" by the robot vehicles. So I had to do some enquiry on this bailiwick before I could compose this painting. So I looked at many NASA photographs of Mars and the ii now-famous country rovers before starting this painting. I needed to get a sense of the landscape and study the land rovers' wheels to empathise how their tracks were made as they moved across the dusty terrain. My client was very pleased when he saw his painting for the first time.
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Mission (MER) is an ongoing robotic space mission that began in 2003 with they sent ii state rovers to explore the Martian surface and geology. Read more about NASA's Mars country rover expeditions.
